Holden He is the main character in this book, The Catcher in the Rye. He is also the narrator of this book and he is 16 years old. He tries to act like an adult but he is immature and because of Allie's death Holden doesn't seem to enjoy anything and thinks many things and people are 'phonies'. Even though he is only 16, he is a heavy smoker and drinks a lot. He got expelled out of many schools and he was expelled again out of Pency Prep.
Pheobe She is Holden's younger sister who is 10 years old but is very intelligent. Phoebe and Holden have a special relationship and they trust and admire each other. She is one of the few people that understands Holden and supports him and also teaches him many things. Holden was afraid that his parents would catch him but, he wanted to talk to Phoebe so much that he snuck in to the house just to have a chat with her. Even though, Holden tried to hide that he got expelled out of Pencey she figures out right away and she scold at him for his sake. Phoebe was Holden's favorite person so he was shocked that he got scolded by her. Also, not only scolding at Holden, but she also eased his feelings at time and at the end because of her, he was able to face the reality of his life.
Stradlater
He was Holden's roommate at Pencey Prep. He was a handsome and over-confident with himself and annoyed Holden in many ways. When Holden wrote an essay for Stradlater about Allie, he started complaining and it made Holden furious and it became a fist-fight. Stradlater thinks he is the best and doesn't think that he is ever wrong.
Allie He was Holden's younger brother who died of leukemia three years ago. He was very smart and everyone liked him especially Holden. He was a bright and smart and he was the smartest in the Caulfields. Holden and Allie got along and Allie was a important person to Holden, so after his death Holden has been unstable and thought the world was against him.
Ackley
Ackley lives in the dorm next to Holden. No one liked him because he was very nosey and dirty. Holden didn't like him either, but he felt sorry for him at the same time and took him to places but didn't enjoy it much.
Mr.Antolini
He used to be Holden's English teacher and Holden's favorite teacher. Mr. Antolini let Holden stay at their house for a while and welcomed him. Holden didn't make fun of anything or think anything was 'phony' when he was at Mr. Antolini's place. This shows that he really trusts Mr. Antolini.
Maurice He was the elevator operator. He sends a prostitute to Holden's room for a 'good time'. They have agreed on a price by he lied to Holden and charges him another 5 dollars. However Holden was stubborn about it and didn't back off. However, Maurice is obviously stronger than Holden and they get in a fist-fight and Maurice takes Holden's money and leaves.
SunnyShe is a young prostitute who was sent by Maurice to Holden's room but they don't do anything and just 'talk'. She comes back to his room the next day with Maurice and charges him another 5dollars.
Old Spencer
Mr. Spencer was Holden's history teacher at Pencey. Before Holden left Pencey he went to Mr. Spencer's place and talked to him for a while. Mr. Spencer liked Holden, however he started to talk about how awful Holden's essay was and started to read it out loud which annoyed Holden a lot. He lectured Holden even though he wasn't listening and Holden tried to leave as fast as he could.
D.B. He is Holden's older brother and served in the army and is now a writer in Hollywood. Holden liked his first book The Secret Goldfish but he doesn't like the fact that he is making them movies and selling in at Hollywood. D.B. supports Holden a lot and gets his life back on track.
Parents(Mr. and Mrs. Cauflield)Mr. Caulfield is a businessman and Mrs. Caulfield is still traumatized over Allie's death. Like any parent, they both care for Holden so they are not happy about Holden being expelled for school.
